Understanding Resistor Color Codes

Most resistors use colored bands to indicate their resistance value. The standard 4-band resistor has bands for two significant information, a multiplier, and tolerance.

Component Parts

Resistor Body (Color Coded)

Ceramic or carbon composition body with color bands that indicate the resistance value. The body also provides insulation and structural support.

Metal Leads (Connectors)

Tinned copper wire leads on both ends for connecting to breadboards, PCBs, or other components. Can be bent to fit different mounting positions.

Common Uses in Arduino Projects

🔆Current Limiting for LEDs

Protect LEDs from burning out by limiting the current flowing through them. Typical values: 220Ω - 1kΩ for 5V circuits.

Pull-up/Pull-down Resistors

Keep digital inputs at known voltage levels when no signal is present. Prevents floating pins that can cause erratic behavior. Typical value: 10kΩ.

📊Voltage Dividers

Create specific voltage levels from a higher voltage source. Used for sensor readings and level shifting. Requires two resistors in series.

🛡️Component Protection

Protect Arduino pins and other components from excessive current. Always add resistors when connecting to external circuits or sensors.
